About Ra
I spent twenty years figuring out why the most disciplined people I knew still felt like something was off. Here's how it started.
In 2006 I moved from Michigan to Los Angeles with a degree in psychology, a degree in exercise science, zero clients and no help. My first gym was a squat rack in the living room of my one bedroom apartment. I trained people all day, saved everything, and kept moving toward my dream of having a gym in Los Angeles. Two years and five locations later, I opened a 10,000 square foot gym in Downtown LA and ran it for nine more years.
At the same time I was competing. Seven years as a professional CrossFit athlete, ranked in the top few hundred in the world. I trained world class athletes, military prospects, law enforcement, and many regular humans. I know exactly what discipline builds, because I lived at the far edge of physical performance.
And at that edge, I hit a ceiling. At a competition with some of the world's best, a filmmaker followed us around for a behind the scenes documentary. When I watched the footage, I couldn't unsee it: athletes at the top of the sport, externally successful, internally at war with themselves. And if I was honest, I recognized a version of it in myself.
I started noticing that pattern everywhere.
So I turned the same obsession I'd aimed at my body toward the other half of the system: the psyche, the breath, the nervous system. I never stopped studying psychology after college. I'd been meditating since I was 19, and mentors taught me to work with the body's energy through techniques that have worked for thousands of years.
I trained these inner practices the way an athlete trains. Everything tested on myself first, then with the people I coached. What worked stayed. What didn't got cut.
What survived that testing is what's inside Self Expansion. I've led these practices for over 1,000 people at a time on international stages.
What I actually teach
Your body and mind are equipment, and almost nobody was handed the manual. Ancient practices worked most of it out long ago. Modern psychology explains why it works. I put the two together in short, repeatable practices that fit a real life.
Animals have brains because they move. Plants stay put, so they never needed one. The brain is movement equipment. Which means you cannot reprogram a mind by sitting still and thinking harder. Movement encodes our programming. That's the frontier Self Expansion works in.
